Feathers- Wedges and Demolition Steel

FEATHERS AND WEDGES

So have this beautiful old property and your trying to keep that 200 year old aesthetic with all the work you do.  You have a walk way, or wall project in front of you that really needs to be done but everything your coming up with just doesn’t look right.  Not much is neater looking and more in place than hand split stones in many of these cases.  But how do you even start?  The same way they have for thousands of years (yep where talking like the Egyptians) with simple feathers and wedges.  Take a look and see the steps below.  No one is going to say this is the easy way out, but it sure is the coolest.

Step 1- Drill Hole in Stone Step 1

Drill holes in the rock along the line that you wish to split

Step 2- Place Feathers and Wedges in Holes Step 2

Insert the Feathers and Wedges into the holes.

Yea we said it was simple

Step 3-5 - Hit with Hammer Step 3

Hit the top of the wedges with a hammer, working your way up and down the line.

Step 3-5 - Hit with Hammer Step 4

Keep Hitting

See if you can keep the beat to that song you can’t get out of your head

Step 3-5 - Hit with Hammer Step 5

Yea I think your getting the point by now.

Like the Shampoo bottles always say if results are not as desired repeat previous step

Step 6- Ta Da Step 6

Once the stone cracks its all over

Except for the moving it into place, getting it supported and leveled, filled back in around it with dirt, mortar or processed, and finishing the remaining landscaping.  But seriously it doesn’t look better than this.
