The Towable Backhoe (also known as a Tow Hoe or Cricket, and occasionally even referred to as a mini-excavator) is a no-nonsense machine. If you are looking for a piece of equipment that will do a job that a regular trencher can’t but don’t want the cost, hassle or mess that a full size backhoe can often bring this is the unit for you.
Our tow hoes have a digging radius of 130 degrees with a strong 9.5 HP engine and a 10 inch wide trenching bucket, with a max digging depth of 7′ and a full reach of 8′.
What does that mean for you?
Regular trenchers only cut a 4″ wide trench, at 18″ they are great for burying seasonal water lines, running gas, power or other data comm lines, at 48″ they can even bury year long water at the frost line, but they have there limitations. If you are needing a trencher for drainage work with either a 4″ or 6″ pipe this units 10″ bucket makes it a breeze to put in your lines. Do you have really rocky soil that a trencher can get through? Use this unit to be able to dig out those larger obstructions. Digging piers or footings for a new porch, shed or addition, and cant get a big enough hole with one of our 12″ bit power augers? This could be the right digger for you.
Being able to tow the unit as close as you can to where you are working is the easiest way to start however you can, you can walk the unit with the bucket by pushing or pulling the machine with the boom arm and the wheels once it is setup. That is why they are often called “Crickets” because of the way they look when doing this.
